rier, as in this colony, the times would probably have been increased by the greater patt of a second. Mr O'Brien thoroughly appreciated hearing again the "roar of the ring'' in place of the totalisalor bell, and although clubs in New South Wales have not the assistance from the profits of the machine, some of the country club- go to a considerable amount of expense in compiling their "Correct Card," judging from that 01 the Beg a Racing Club, which 's full of information, valuable to owners, trainers, and die racing public. In fact, it is a handy little book if reference, and only costs a shilling. The New South Wales Owners', Breeds', and Trainers' Association has just completed its first year of existence, and, according to the report, is in a flourishing condition, working harmoniously with the Australian Jockey Club and of great assistance to owners and trainers. It is difficult to understand the antipathy displayed by the Racing Conference towards the llorseowners' Association in this colony. It is stated that it will cost about £2OOO to repair the Flemington course after the uoods, and a big effort to gel it ready for the Melbourne Cup meeting. Saga, winner of the maiden plate ar, the Olaki meeting, is a three year old filly by Soult and as she won her race fairly easily may be heard of again before long. Some exceptionally fast times were recorded at the meeting. Sherlock Holmes, who won ihc Stewards hack race on the first day, is credited with doing the six furlongs in 1.15 1-5, while Mani cut out the Flying Handicap in 1.14 4-5-There are at present over twenty horses working on the Waverley track, which augers well for the local meeting next month. C. Birkett had the misfortune to lose a promising filly by San Fran die other morning, who broke her legwhile running in the paddock. .The Otago Cup candidate Notus is reponed to be training on well at Wingatui. Letherin and Makaroff are the last of the Cup horses to put in an appearance at Kiccarton. Paritutu is expected to leave for headquarters tins week. A recent cable announces that Gladsome has been definitely retired to the stud.
The Wellington Racing Club will run its own totalisator for the first time at the forthcoming meeting. Mr L'lie Shannon has been appointed handicapper for the summer meeting of the Rangitikei Racing Club. Armistice is reported to have, trained on well since the vYanganui meeting, and it is expected that by the time the two mile race at Kiccarlon comes up for decision the mare will strip fit to run the raee of her life. A wellknown Christchurcli sportsman (says a Canteibury scribe) drew Solution in TaLtcrsall's Consultation on the Metropolitan Handicap and was thereby enriched to the extent of £d.ajo. The same writir also remarks that Cross Battery is a beautiful filly and a racer all over. i shall not be surprised in see he r turn out to be the champion of the year. IvanolF's mishap at the Hawkcs Bay Meeting will probably prevent the colt from fulfilling his engage- ■ mints at the. Cup Meeting next mon-
Cross Battery and Master Alix are \\i popular fancies for the Stewards tandicap.
Says the Sydney Referee ; For disobedience at the post in the Breeder's Plate at Randwick on Monday, J. Gough, rider of Ctyograft, was fined ,£lO, and for not riding Oakton past the judge's box before going to ihe post 111 tiic. New Stakes \\'. Foulsham was fined £2. Intelligence is spoken ~f a- a filly likely io show u|> prominently during th- season. She is by Biikenhcad from Industry. In Ins report of the race for the Metropolitan Slakes "Umpire" in the Sydney Referee remarks:—Almost at once Savoury ru-hed to the front, headed Solution, and dashed past Oxcnharil's to the mile post with a couple of lengths advantage. So lution followed the leader along the back, going well within herself, and when, before making the six furlongs, Hewitt let lwr go, and she sailed past Savoury on the way io the half mile, with Maximize, Lcchino. Famous, and Luciana following, and Poseidon making a forward move; also the Bairn. Making the home turn Famous was racing up towards the leader, and for a moment it looked as though he would run her down, bat her length advantage as she turn ed the corner »a» soun extended as sh.> readied away again, with Famous in clogged pursuit. Then Poseidon appeared, making a good run, which tie kept up, but it was no g"ocl,. for he only pas-eel Famou-. beating him by three lengths, but -till five behind Solution as she struck the judge's bne. It was a hollow victory, no special eftiiii lying called for at any -luge of the juumev. 1.. 11. Hewitt, who rode lloniform in ihe Breeders' l'l„ie at R.mdwick, is given ihe credit of Mr Stead's success in that event, as' Wlilrov,' of the Sydney Mail, say- that Mr. Stead can entirely thank the jockey for the
valuable two-y, ar-old race. Hewitt rede lionifotm a waiting race,' and won with a well-timed run from the haif-di-lancc. It i, ijuite a time since we have -ecu wailing tactics adopted with a two-yeai-okl over five fin longs, and it was also a reminder ol the days of Tom Hales.
