The Chairman of the Recreation G-ounls Board desires yery gralefullv to acknowledge the ollicicnt aid ot tli Fire Brigade and members of tip Spirts Ground Committee, and especi Vly the valuable services rendered b Mr Geo. Cock and his willing helper, vho did the bulk of the work in con nection with the fireworks' display las night. A Taranaki farmer who Iris reeentli returned from Australia, says tlm " Sydney is the place to sell lio-sps.' He saw a pair of ponies sold for £lB —one for £IOO and the other for ,tS<> A lino pair of biggj horses brouuii £l2O, Sheep also were at a higl value, upwards of £5 being obtainable for good ewes. Two bales of wool, oonUimng locks leeces, and dags, brought in fmm 1 country station, were found to be mud healed on arrival at the Wellington station. The Wood FireComui ssioncr.were communicated with, and inline liately pur.-hased the bales, wuh a view to experiments. It is considered that valuable evidence may be obtained through these bales.
The fireworks display in the Recreation Grounds last night wr.s attended by a big concourse of people. Tin lake, Poet's bri Ige, and surronnding.niakc an almost ideal place for a pyrotechnic display, and the fireworks went off in good style. The one fault was the shortness of the programme. Tin Military Band played on the rotund, during the whole evening The whole of the grotmls Mas lighted nit. torches and lanterns, and the lake hao quite a fairyland appearance.
Mr Newton King wielded the ham tner in person at the Taranalu Wool, j Sheepskins, Hides, and Tallow Hales. held at Stratford on Tuesday, says ilie "Post." The prices realised and th< brisk bidding resultant are ample prooi that although other and perhaps more important branches of his b isines* now demand his attention, Mr King's skill as an auctioneer is still undiminished. To those who a few since were wont to accompany Mr King to his sales, the expenenci brought back many pleasing recollections, and the animation infused into the sale evinced the fact that his old time virility and energy are fuli\ maintained.
During his visit to the Old People'' Horn-on Wednesday, His Excellent, the Governor put m an interesting few minutes chatting with the old ladies of the place. The lirst he accosted was » lady who has attained the great bg'jf I*2. " Where did you come from ! J " enquired the distinguished visitor. " Kilkenny, in old Ireland," replied the feeble dame. " And you like tins place ?•' " Oh, yes ; but they can't do everything for us you know," answered (he old lady, who in the nexl breath exclaimed, after surveying His .Excellency, " You're a young man , T el ; it will be a long time before you tie!" " I hope so," answered the ijovcrnor, who, passing on, came across a woman who told him she was a native of Galway. "And sure I knew the Phinkets there," she exclaimed. "Indeed; my A.D.C. her. ,vas horn in Gahvay," explained the Governor. "Yes," proceeded the old woman, "there's plenty of good salmon there. Faith, if we were there I would feed ye up wid them." "Even if we had to poach lliem!" added His Excellency with a merry twinkle in hi.eye.
Time is said to be money. It's a good tiling to have both. You'll save both tit the Melbourne C'othing Company; you won't have to wait a minute for the suit, hats or pair of boot-, and you're bound to be pleas ! 'd with the prices if you're a judge •f a bargain.—Advt.
The acknowledged good (junlitios and success of Sander and Sons' Eucalypti Extract have brought out many imitations, and one case was iust tried in the Supreme Court of Victoria, before His Honor Chief fustice Sir J. Madden, K.C.M.C.,' etc.
His Ifonor, in giving judgment, said with regard to the Genuine Sander and Sons' Euralvpti Extract, that whenever an article is commended to the public by reason of its good c/ualities, etc., it is not permissible to imitate any of its features. He restrained the imitators perpetually from doing so, and ordered them to pay all costs. Therefore, insist upon what is proved beyond all doubt hv skilled witnesses at the Supreme Court ol Victoria, and by many authorities 'lurin'cf the last 30 years to be a pre "aration of genuine merit, viz..
