SOLVENCY MAINTAINED BY TATTERSALL'S. PROBABLE UNION WITH VICTORIA. Received gth, 10.59 p.m. Melbourne, October 9. Mr Evans, the Premier of Tasmania, stated in an interview that he (coked forward with a shudder to the time when the revenue derived from TaUersa'l's will have to be given up. Directly and indirectly it yielded sixty thousand annually, and would be a -erious loss. The people would not appreciate paying treb'c what they now contribute in Ability Tax, as they might hand to do if Tattersall's revenue went. He believed it was only a matter of a little time when it must gc Although they had Tattersall s, t,,ere weie no betting shops or clubs 1,1 Tasmania and little or no crime arising out cf gambling. He questioned the possibility of Victoria and Tasmania amalgamating. Tasmania would resent the idea of being absorbed, but the financial posiiion was me of such grave concern that he -hculd not wonder, unless it improves, 1! amalgamation did not become a question within the realm of practi- .*! politics. Mr Bent, Premier of Victoria, declares that Victoria is not eager to absorb the smaller State.
