WATER SUPPLY EXTENSION.

DISCUSSION IN BOROUGH COUNCIL. Mi C. Carter, as spokesman for a deputation of Carrington road and \ ogeliou n ratepayers, asked the Borough Council 011 Monday to connect that district with the town water system by connecting the pipes at Mill road with those at Mr Kemp's, Victoria road. The question was, of course, one of means. He understood that the cost of this scheme would be .£l7O, of wliicn was for labour and /124 for material which the Council had in hand. The actual cost wou'd be £4O. By this outlay the Council could put its unused material into profitable operation earning 15 a year, or 8 per sent. Some of the sections on the Carrington road were contributing to the borough rates. Building operations were fairly brisk, and Voglctuwn was now becoming- a v(Ty popular suburb. A water service would enccuiago further building, and every additional'house would mean additional revenue to the Council.

Mr Bannister followed, pointingout that the water service w r ou'd give a sense of security in the matter of fire.

Ihe Mayor said the Council was jusi as anxious as the deputation K extend tiio water service, but it wa a question of funds. The mattei would receive sympathetic treatnien when it came up.

The deputation thanked the Council and wiihdte\y. Later in the evening. Councillor Ht'liiinger moved that the request uf III" depot ai i.in be granted.

Councillor Collifs urged that the whole borough should be reticulated for fire prevention purposes. Ci. Belli inger said that every point in the borough could be reached by the fire brigade. Councillor llutchen would like to

see a comprehensive report by a committee on the whole subject of water marn extension.
