TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.'') A rumour is current that the Hon J. D. Ormond's Zimmerman wM be reserved for the C.J.C. Derbv. Gi and Slam, the winner of the Ilawke's Bay Guineas, 15 bv The Pos sibk- from Secuia. It is difficult i; understand how the colt was allowed to pay such a false price. On hit running at the Wanganui Meeting, lie appeared to have a rcaiiy good chance m the. race. The huidlcr Hokio has be C n sole for 14 J guineas. The Wanganui correspondent of tin "A./..Herald ', in commenting on the Wanganui Guineas, sUy,*:—Though lto landed the Guineas for the Hon. J D. Ormond the Birkenhead gelding must be accounted lucky to have beat en 'tnseo. The latter was sent out favourite, but got away rather slowlv, and was cut out soon after til-' stai't losing some lengths. At the finish In' \va> galloping over everything, am later on may prove that those wno an-'
licipated that he would be one of th< best of the season's three-year-olds were not far wrong. So far as looks went Loftus was the "daddv" of tin eight contestants, the Seaton Delave. gilding looking a perfect picture; bu. ihouga he shaped well foj- three-quar-ters of a mile he quite, failed to stav out ihe distance. lto only starteo,
once as a two-year-old, when he ran unplaced in the Juvenile Handicap al the Ahnawatu Autumn Meeting. Tangimoana winning that event. Jto is one likely to improve with age, and it will be strange indeed if one so well bred Iby Birkenhead out of Trentalto) docs not turn out to be something above the ordinary. Mr \\. R. Tuck'had very bad luck when Tainora broke down in the Spring Handicap at the Wanganui meeting, as the gelding was showing gieat promise, although he had been only a few weeks in training. Says '-Phaeton'' in the iS.Z.Herald: The lotalisaun receipts in connection with the Avondale Jockey Ciub's recent spring meeting puis ip a lresh record in a somewhat pronounced form, for the sum handled represents an amount in excess of that put through at the spring and autumn meetings held last season at the western suburb.
Zimmerman has come into prominence in the betting on tlic New Zealand Cup recently, and the best price obtainable in some quarters is 10 to i. Mr Lowry is considered to possesV a really good filly in Lady Nell (Birk-enliead-Lady Helen). Cross Battery is credited with having put up a record performance ovei hall a mile on the Riccarlon i r ;i C k lasi Satuiday morning-. The eurtain will be rung down on the Australian J.C. Spring Meeting to day. New Zealand horses figure in several of the events. Solution's name only appears in the Final Handicap f one mile and a quarter. Porcelain is engaged in the High weight (Ofurlongs), and the Kandwick Plate Ui miles ; and Huascar is in the Mem bcr's Handicap run over one mile and a fui long. Belcher's patent hurdles, used at Kangitikci and Wanganut meetings, appear to have given every satisfaction. As these hurdles minimise the risk ol injury to both horse and rider, it is probable that tliey will be adopted by many clubs. Parkshot is being hacked about at present with a view of being put into active work shortly. The Sylvia Park gelding will probably be put to the "illegitimate game." Cyrene, ivko broke down some time is again in work ou the local course.
