OBITUARY.
ME JAMES PAUL. After a very long and painful illness Mr James Paul died at Ins residence, " Guiru iJiiu,' New Plymouth, shortly before 11 o eloclc oji Thursday eycuing, at the age of (i t years, and by that sad eyent New Plymouth lost one of her best aud most upright citizens, anil New Zealand another of those gallant settlers who bore the trials of the early settlement of this colony. His death will bo regretted the whole colony through. ,jMr Paul occupied the Mayoralj chair in New Plymouth m 1884-5, and has been prominently connected with many local institutions, lie was boru in Scotland, and received his education in his native town. He came to Australia when quite a young man, and crossed to New Zealand in the ship Jura in 1862. After a short stay iu Dtmedin, lie came to New Plymouth, aad started bis well-known and successful brewery business m 180-1. During tho native disturbance, Mr Paul saw active service with the local forces, and has latterly taken a lorward part in the ranks of the Taranaki war veterans, l'jie late Mr Paul was well known in racing circles, having been connected with the Taranaki Jockey Club, and filled the position ot honorary secretary to the Club for 27 years. He was a member of the order of Eree Masons, and lias beld oliice ou \ several occasions, Mrs Paul survives _ | her husband, who also leaves four sons and one daughter to mourn their loss.
