The Town Clerk lias received a nottF from Mr H. C. Wiiterlield, private secretary to his Excellency Lord I'luuket, stating that the Governor will arrive in New Plymouth by the
mail traiu on October Dili, and leavo on the 11th. Lord Plunki-t is to stay at tho "White Hart Hotel during bis visit. Ho will be met at the .-tat on on arrival by tho Mayor and the Heeeption Committee. At 11 o'clock nest morning the Council will be presented to him at the hotel, and will drive round with hiin to visit objects o£ local interest, including the petroleum works and the Old Men's Home. At 1 p.m.
the Governor will lunch with the Council, and will arrive at the. llecrcation Grounds at 3 p.m. Here au address of welcome will be presented, to be followed by the introduction of representative citizens, volunteer and veteran officers.
The Tututawa School Committee has opened up what may prove a knotty question. Applications were inyited for the position of sole teacher at thaL school, and the names of several applicants were seut ou by the Board for
the committee's selection. The committee, however, has elected not to choose from this list, but asks that the present temporary teacher, Miss Cameron, should receive the permanent' appointment. In this request the committee is supported by a petition from the settlers interested. A bicycle road raco from the Red House Hotel to Bell Block store and back took place yesterday afternoon. The following ten riders competed: \V. Skipper and D. George, scratch; E. Drake, Jmin; W. Wbittaker, S. George, \Y. Roebuck, imin; H. Crockett, ijmin; F. Hawke, Stead, 4mm; S. Hawke, A gale of wind favoured the riders as far as Bell Block, but on tho homo journey it troubled a few. F. Hawke finished fitst in 275 mm, W. Whltaker second in 25min, half a wheel from S. In the Magisirate's Court yesterday (Wednesday). Wm. Rcid was charged before Dr. A.M'Arihur, S.M., with having sold a New Zealand Truth newspaper of iHth August, iyoO, a part of which, entitled "Hymns Up-o-date" and "Hushed was tho Evening Hymn,' 1 was of an indecen> and immoral nature. Counsel, in opening for the prosecution, said the defendant was accountant or clerk employed by the proprietary of Truth. A paper would be put in evidence, and the prosecution would say that the I article in question was contrary to I the provisions of the statute. Mr ! A special correspondent wires from KnhiHu:—A meeting was held at Mr N«\vton King's sa'eyards, Rahoiu, on Thursday afternoon, to discuss the proposals laid down in the Land Bill now before Parliament. Over one hundred farmer* and landowners were present, and the following resolutions wore passed : —"That this meeting of settlers of Rahoiu and the surrounding districts strongly protest agains; tli. - ? A press wire from Invercargill states that the Key George Lindsay, of St. .Paul's, Inverearg]ll,has been nominatid by ike Southland Presbytery for the olliee o£ Moderator of the General Assembly. Mr A. E. Sykcs, has just returned to New Plymouth after a tour of the South. Mr Sykcs met with great success in placing his cattle drench, which is in considerable demand all over the colony. Miss Gertrude Alexander, now of the Durham-road school, has been recommended to the Education Board b~y the School committee for appointment ;o the Dudley-road school. Miss Rigby, teacher at the Elthamroad school, who has been on sick leave for some time, telegraphed to the Education Board's secretary the other day an intimation that she was tit to resume duty. Only a day or two had elapsed when another message was received that the young lady was again seriously ill. Mr Biche'ns is temporally filling her position.
