THE CENTRAL SCHOOL.

A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. I ho sixpence so readily pared with by tho very larye crowd ot people oil thuisday afternoon and evening at the entrance to the Central Scnoo. were sixpences well spent for two leasons: First, because ihe coin wa. 1 - given in a good cause, tho raising of funds to put the school playgiounds and tennis courts in order, and, secondly, because the parting with the little bit of cash gave Uk nght of entree to one of the prettiest and best-arranged school entertain ments it has been the lot of i\ew Plymouth folk to witness. Eor months past the teachers of the Central Schoo. and a strong committee of ladies parents of the children, have been ai woik preparing for this exhibition and sale of work. Space does not permit of enumerating all the work eis some at home, some at "bees, ! many in both places, but the names ot Mr Dempsey, the headmas.er anc organiser of the affair, and Mrs E. Uockriil, the -Mayoress, W | )o acted as president of the committes, were enthusiastically acclaimed as |he two who had given the greatest service. i he school buildings have been transfoimed, so that even the pupils coulci scarce recognise the walls of theii

class-rooms. The big- room at tlu western end is the competition room. Here are the cookery exhibits, and the judges spoke very highly of the qua»t> of the scones, cak»s, and pastry shown by tho chi-d.cn. Close alongside i: the handwriting section, followed by the hobbies, ti:e drawing' and sketches, a row of beautnuliy dressed dol]f>, whilst in the centre of the room arc ihe decorated tab.es and othe, floral classes. Some of die tablet would do credit to adults, whilst the buttonholes and bouquets also showed some taste, it is a peculiar fact that the best buttonholes w'ere made by he boy exhibitors. In the next 100 m is found the plain and fancy sewmg, fully S.ockcd with what tlu diapers would term "a magnificent range" of needlework of a l 1 kinds. I'lic variety evidently suited the re quirements, for brisk business done in tiiis department. I'arflie, along" the passage the vigorous ringing of a bell attracts attention . It: object is Soon manifest, for Mr C. T. Mills, ilie secretary of the school com

mittee, announces "afternoon tea this way. 1 ' Parents and well-wishers arc asked to help to-day by sending along dishes, particularly scones. Next door is the "jumb'e stall," and ilu bookstall, with a novel art gallery. I here is a splendid assortment here, as well as in the adjoining- room, which is fit.cl and filled as a produce stall. The gymnasium is a scene oi dazzling decoration. At night the school boat, riged with mast ana spars, was like a fairy boat, pretty electric light bulbs sparkling through the decorations, and among the toys, Tho inevitable Christmas tree, a Father Christmas figure, palms, flowers, and ferns make this room an attractive sight. The fish-pond takes Uie place of the more accustomed bran tub, and there is a refreshment stall for lollies, etc. At night tho Garrison Band helped to enliven the proceedings, and an orcnestra supplied bright music at intervals. Mr JJo la Haye ran his elecric battery, and Mr Atteriirs phonograph sounded out during tho evenmg. The electric sewing machine and kettle attracted considerbale attention, whilst a pleasing diversion was afforded by iho pupils 1 gymnastic display in the grounds. Mr G. Tisch gave his interesting lantern display, and a chorus of nigger minstrels ( ad 'ed to the enjoyment. Mr Dempsey wishes to express his warmest thanks to Mr Black, tho borough electrical enginer, and his staff, also to Messrs Smart Bros., for the elaborate electrical displays, and to all the earnest helpers who have made the affair such a success. The exhibition and sale continue to-day and to-night, and as a result the funds will doubtless benefit considerably,

Amongst those present wore Messrs Wade, 1 iscli, and Adlam, members uf > he Education Board, Mr W. A. Collis (chairman), and several members of the seliool and His Worship the Mayor, Mr E. DockriU. The following is the result of the various compositions:*-*
