AUSTRALIAN PREFERENCE PROPOSALS.
THREATENED GERMAN REPRISALS.
GERMAN NEWSPAPER COM MENT.
Received ist, 10.20 p.m. Berlin, October 1.
The agrarian anglophobe newspaper. Deutsche Tagetzeitung, commenting on the statements regarding German reprisals, published in Australia, remarks that the application of the general tariff on Canadian goods had little effect, as the import's were ■mall, but Australia's exports to Germany were threefold that of Germany's to Australia. Germany accord' "most favoured treatment'' to British colonies, but there was no obligation to do so. The Federal Council could, by a simple decree, abolish the concession. Then Australian wheat and malt wou'd be subjected to the general tariff, and the momem Australia imposes differential duties on German goods, the reprisals could take effect. If German/ remains impassive, and the Indies introduces differential duties, then the bu'k of Germany's exports 10 Britisli colonies will be subject to differential treatment. If Germany intends 10 act, she ought not wait until this ex treme has been reached.
TREATY WITH NATAL PROCLAIMED. Received 2nd, 12.8 a.m. Pietermaritzburg, October 1. A proclamation at Mariizburft establishes reciprocity between Naial and Au'tralia.
