A \\'anganui-,excl) all go states that | Mr FranffiSMOffSt, who has held the position of secretary to the Wanganui Jockey Club for many years past, has been compelled, through pressure of business, to forward his resignation. Mr Moffat has proved himself to be a most capable and obliging secretary, and many will regret his retirement from the oflicc. After the reports that have come to hand concerning' Sir Geo. Clifford's pair, the running of Golden Cairn in tho Guineas was somewhat disappointing. After getting a good start the horse finished out of a place. Fontenoy, ridden by C. Jenkins, was a strong favourite for the Flying Handicap at the Wanganui Meeting. After getting well away, the Haul Brion horse finished out- of a pUue.

After being exercised at Ellerslie on Thursday morning (states the New Zealand Herald-, tlie three-year-old fil y Prim> (Phoebus Ap >llo— Lena) was noticed to bo suffering. While being taken back to the stable she went clown, and on Mr E. D. Halstead examining the filly he found her suffering from paralysis, and he advised that she should be destroyed, which was accordingly done. Primo was owned by Mr C. Lovett, Tho amount of the dividend paid out in the Avondale Stakes was the subject of much discussion. According' to the grand total the investors on the first and second horses should have received a dividend of odd for tho winner avid £2 10, for the second horse, instead of this £iu 14/ and ij were the amounts paid. In referring to the matter,

"Phaeton," in the New Zealand Herald, says:—The correctness of the dividend paid over the Avondale Stakes on Saturday last was extensively challenged, but the point in dispute has been satisfactorily cleared up. It appears that one of the staff in putting up the grand total figures omitled t" take the sums invested on the two leading horses on the 10, machines, which, of course, gave the public a wrong idea. The club's duplicate books, made up immediately after the race, and each with a separate working out of the sum foi distribution, show that tho dividends as paid out were correct. It is pleasing to have the point cleared up; but all the same it behoves those who are engaged in conducting the totalisator business to exercise the closest oversight and exercise tho utmost care, so that there may be no room for a doubt to be thrown on the figures. The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting' will be continued today. The principal events on the programme arc the Metropolitan Stakes (one mi;e and a-half), and ti>e Breeders' Plate (live furlongs). In the latter are engaged Boniform (Multiform—Otterden) and Seddon (Souli —Rose and White). Both events are fu'l of interest to New Zealanders. In the Metropolitan, Soiulicn still holds pride of place in the betting, and t.ie result ot tin race will be anxiously awaited by many sportsmen throughout the col-

Armistice does nut incur a penally in ilio Xt.w Zealand Cup for lur win at- Wanganui. finished last in the Wanganui Handicap. The old Cup winner appears to have seen his best clays.

U. Price had die mount on five winners at the meeting. Tarina, winner oi the Railway Hack, is a four-year-old mare by St. Clements—Aka, and is owned by Mr Harry Goad.

St. Joo was heavily supported on the machine for the hnal event at the meeting. but evidently- had no chanec with iho winner.

Should Boomerang win the King Edward Handicap at ilawke's Bay. he will incur u lib penalty in the .New Zea.awi Cup. The veteran horseman, R. Delicti, has purchased the Racecourse Hotel at Riccarton from M. llobbs.

Si me strong remarks have been made »n leference to the running of some of the horses at the Avondal<' uncling. There appears to b"' an urgent need for stricter supervision by stewards at some race meetings. If Solution wins the Metropolitan Slakes the mare's weight in the Melbourne Cup will be increased to Bst 4H3, for winch event she has been strongly supported. Mr G. G. Stead should secure his first win at the meeting to-day in the 13; -('Jits' Plate.

The result if ih<' Metropolitan Slakes and the Bleeders 1 Plate will be posted at the NEWS oflice this evening immediately after it is received.

Tho A.J.C. Derby winner, Posiedon, is n bay colt by Positano from Jacinth, trained by I. F.arnshaw, who generally has something pretty good in his stable. Maximise, winner of the Epsom Handicap, who was previously known as Magazine, is a five-year-old mare by Havoc uut of (>orgin;i, owned and trained by Mi C. Baldwin.
