TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Mo«ting opens to-day at Randwick (Sydney). The principal events on the programme to-day are the Epsom Handicap and the Derby. In the laiter Mr G. G. Stead has lluascar engaged, and whether (re is capable of following in Noctuiform's footsteps is doubtful, although the son of Hotchkiss has been doing well since his ariival. In Collarit Antonius, and lolaire, however, ho has some strong opponents, and I am of opinion that Antonius or Collarit will provide the winner. Another event interesting to New Zealanders on to-day's card is the Spring Stakes, run over a mile and a-half, in which Solution, Isolt, and Porcelain are engaged. Auratus has met with a mishap which, I am informed, is sufficiently serious to cause a retirement from active work for some time. This will considerably interfere with his Cup preparation.
Gladstone has incurred a ;lb penalty in the New Zealand Cup on account of his win at Avondale.
A recent cable from Sydney states that Mclodcon broke away while at exercise the other morning and ran into a fence. The extent of the injury was not known. The Wanganui scribe "Achilles'' says that Mr Dalton has an exceptionally fine looking unnamed San I ran Mantle filly doing light work. She is a half-sister to Mahutonga. No doubt this promising filly will be heard more about before very long.
