UNITED IRISH LEAGUE
IRISH DELEGATES INVITED TO NSW PLYMOUTH.
A meeting of the above league was held on Monday night to consider the advisability of inviting Mr Joseph Devlin, M.P. (Belfast) to Taranaki, and also to decide on the most suitable place to receive him. The meeting was largely attended. Mr M. Jones proposed that Mr Devlin be invited to Taranaki, and stated the grounds on which New Plymouth should be chosen as the place to hold the meeting. Continuing, he said that from what he knew of the district, ho believed that the delegates would receive good support here. He also outlined the constitution of f hc proposed committee. This was seconded by the Rev. Dean McKenna. An amendment was moved by Mr Sullivan, that Stratfcrd be selected as the place to hold the meeting, and that the formation of a committee be decided at a later date.
Subsequently Messrs Jones and Sullivan withdrew their respective, proposition, and amendment in favour of Dr. McCleland, who proposed a resolution that a meeting be held in New Plymouth. He stated that a meeting was already decided on in llawera, and therefore the selection of Stratford wou'd not be advisable. Further, that people along the c.asi had expressed a wish that a meeting would be held here. He therefore moved that the Irish de'egnies be invited to New Plymouth, and that a meeting be held here, This was seconded by Mr Barry, and carried. A strong committee was formed, consisting of the Rev. Dean McKenna, Dr. McCleland, W. T. Jennings, M.H.R., West, Barry, Buckley, Jones (2), SuMivan, McCarthy, O'SulHvan (2), O'Brien, Malone, Clarke and Smith. After a good deal of routine busi ness was transacted a vote of thanks was, on the motion of Mr Buckley, seconded by Mr P. Jcnes, passed to the Rev. Dean McKenna for presiding, and the meeting adjourned to Thursday, 27th inst. The Irish delegates (Messrs Joseph Devlin, M.P., and John Donovan, LL.B.) are at present in Australia, and will arrive in New Zealand about the end of October. They are both good speakers, and as members of the Imperial Parliament their visit to New Plymouth will no doubt be looked forward to with interest.
