It is stated that the German ConsulGeneral has been instructed liv cable to represent to the Commonwealth Government in the most friendly way that the announcement of the proposed new surtax on foreign goods lias been received in commercial circles in Germany with anxiety and indignation, and that the German Government, while deprecating any attempt to influence the policy of the Commonwealth, fears it will be compelled to take measures that would have the effect of interfering with the mutual commercial relations of Germany and Australia.
