THE CIPSY FAIR.

i A very pretty effect was produced by the gaily-clad Gipsv lads and maids at the Whiteley Hall on Thurs- _ day afternoon, the lavish decorations of nikau palms, ferns, and other foliage making a fine background. The ' occasion was the gipsy fair arranged > by the young people of the Methodist Church to raise funds for the P erection of the new parsonage, and ' the promoters and managers arc de- ' serving of the highest praise for the state of perfection reached in the r various details. The fair opened in ! the afternoon, and was continued at i night, when there scarce was stand--0 ing-room, and the demand for "prot ducc" from the stall (under the supers vision of Misses Ambury, Hodder , and Early) and for refreshments from Miss Catran's department prov- . Ed bigger than had been anticipated. 5 But the "reserve" just met the de--3 mand, and fresh supplies are being . procured for to-night's business. The arrangement of the refreshment department was very tastful, a note > worthy feature being a fern grotto 3 and li'y pond at one end of the room, 1 with its little ducks en the p!aci-i 1 surface. The art gallery contains J over eighty works of art, and the 1 fancy goods stall under Miss White 1 attracts numerous buyers. The de- , faculty of the committee has ' been given full pl'ay ori th fi Stage, which represents a gipsy enenmp- : meat. A small tent in a leafy glade, - with the inevitable billy boiling- on a ■ rosy fiic i n th c foreground, and gip - sies scattered round makes a very i pretty scene. The musical pre- : gramme was in charge of Misses - Back and K. Coiiis, and Hie whole of the choruses and vocal items were 1 splendidly given. Mr K. Canned played the accompaniments. AH the attendants arc attractively attired in . Gitana costume. To-night the fair continues. The stalls will be restocked, and the refreshment room in full swing. Thc programme, will , include a goal musical sketch, songs and instrumental items, and a number of pretty tableaux.
