A BABY FARMER.
CHILD DIES OF NEGLECT. Per Press Association. W'e'lington, September icj. The resuk of an inquest held on the body of an infant to-day was that Mrs Mary Guy, in whose custody the child had been placed, was arrested to night on a charge of manslaughter. The circumstances of the case were that the infant, the child of a single girl, had been given into Mrs Guy's care, £2O being paid by the mother. The chi d died 011 Sunday •last, not having been seen by a medical man. It was 21 months old. The surgeon, who made the post mortem, said he found the body thin and emaciated. It weighed about half what it should have done. There was hardly any lat on the body, and there was no sign of food in the stomach or intestines. The child had been given a lung ba'sam prepared by a local chemist. This contained tincture of chloroform and morphia and laudanum. The immediate cause of death was distension of the sti m ach, due to opium paralysis acting on diseased lungs. Neglect was one of the causes of death.
The jury found that the child died from neglect and want of nourishment.
