CAPE TO CAIRO RAILWAY.

Sir Charles Metcalfe, who is about io return to South Africa in connection with the opening of the Broken Hill section of the Cape-to Cairo railway, states that by September there wilt be a regular service of trains from Capetown for a distance of 2,100 miles to Broken Hill. At Broken Hill the direct Cape toCairo line will probably branch off. It will go to the South end cf Tanganyika. The Germans in German East Africa are making a move with their railway, and Sir Charles says that if the British Government wi'l only see that the best bus;ness pc icy is to join up what is cal ed the Uganda railway with Khartoum, the Germans making the 600 miles through their territory, the Cape to-Cano scheme will be practically complete.
