STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr VV. P. Kirk wood, of the County Hotel, has, at the request of a deputation of ratepayers, consented to al low himself to be nominated for the Council vacancy. At the S..M. Court on Thursday a resident of Midhirst was fined 5 . without costs, for smoking on the Stratford Station platform. Rather an expensive smoke, but as he had been previously warned to refrain from smoking on the platform he has on'.y himself to b'ame. The railway officials mean to strictly enforce this order, so smokers beware. The Stratford branch of the W.C. T.U. believes in asking. It asked Mr R. \V. BKgh to deliver addresses on social impurity to men and women in the Town Hal l . He consented and gave the addresses. At the last meeting of the Borough Council the W.C. T.U. through its secretary asked the Council to refund the amount charged for the Town Hall, as the lectures were not a financial success. Needless to say the Council refused to entertain the request. If the W.C.T.U. consider such lectures as Mr Bligh's are productive of so much good, and presuming it has nothing but the good of the people at heart, surely ' the members of it will not begrudge a shilling or two to advance the cause.
