In one of the main streets of Ingle wood is to lie seen and heard an escape of gas from ''down below." The oracle says there is petroleum there. At Mangorei, on the property of Messrs Marlin 'and Rransgrove. are lo be found strong- indications. Our reporter paid a visit to Mr I'etche's tarin the other day, and was courteously received and invited (o view the indications, and was escort ed to about ihe centre of the property, win to indications were found sure enough. Taking- a bird's eye view of the place, one could see what appeared to 1 bo just ordinary springs bubbling in a creek, some of them beingvery active, the largest just rcsemb'ling a cauldron of boiling- water, withi.ut the steam. Ail this disturb ance was caused by an escape of gas through the water. Mr f'e\ch struck several matches ;md lit many of the "springs" 5 there were inmost a dozen places which could be lit by throwing down a lighted match. Attention was drawn to some brown, greasy peaty earth, which affords the very best indications, so says the expert. Next a bole was made jn (lie ground at a spot which l u id apparently been ie;ciitly disturbed. The hole was 511 deep and 3UI in diameter, and from this line gas was beingejected, at a force said to be equal lo Xolb per square inch. Gas rtisiietj out with a -roar which i\,ally nuide one feel uncomfortable. Tilis also was lit, and sent a flame at least two feet high. From this spot, at a depth '' 1 Sfl, was taken a sample of crude oil. Indications such as these are at least reassuring.
