On the Court staling they required tile ! evi lcnce of the signalman, tin- Cullecmr of Customs said il was dilliciill Io take men away from lighthouses, and he did not think the Marine Department would agree lo it. Mr Kettle, S.M , remarked that it was a pity the Shipping and Seamen's Act did nol contain provision for allowing evidence ill >neh inquiries to be laken beiore a Justice of the Peace, as •he Court was often put lo great LivuUe in iiiniiieal inquiries. For this reason ihe Collector iindertouk to try and secure the aitendanee of the signalman.
