"DAY AND NIGHT."

The cantata " Day and Night "was given in the Queen street Primitive Methodist Church on Tuesday night, and those who had the pleasure of tearing it aver that it was a real musical treat. Mr Jcnkmson sang the tenor ;010 " The Mora ts Breaking," which ■vas a vocal treat, and later on "I ■viil lay me down" was also excellently treated. The duet " Come to Me, Oil ye Children," by Misses Loescli and C. Sole, was very evenly balanced. \Tr Sharpe sang " The Reapers," and

hi-; other solos " Honor and Arms," md " Now the Toil of Day" were up 0 his usual liigli standard. " The I'romise of Lile" by Mr Blake, and "The Kadient Horn " by Miss Loescli were sang to appreciiliyejlisteners. I'lie gem ol the evening was Miss N.xon's rendering of "The Lord is my S lephord," her lovely soprano voice b.'ing at its best, which needs no comment. Miss Nixon aho contributed n " Ave Marin," from one of Mnscagis's most famous operas, and this item was splendidly lroato.l. Avery pleasng portion of llie lunt.du was "The ■icciie outside the church," Mr Jtnkinsou taking tin! solo, with vocal accompaniment by the choir, the organ a eomp.iuinient and the work of the c orus pro'lucmg above the solo the effect of congregational singing at a little distance. The only quartet was " 0 blessed is that lan I," by Misses Blike and. Sole, and Messrs .Jenkinson and Sliarpo, the voices blending well. One chorus " Hail, gladdening light," was taken without accompanimcnl,„and the parts were exception lily well taken, in fact the whole of the chorus singing can be described as excellent. In the interlude, Mr H. Salt played a very line violin solo, "A Reverie" (vieutemps), 'Miss Kobson playing th» accompaniment. Mr Salt handled this diilicult piece ia brilliant style. There was a capital orchestra. The conductor, Mr Ji. A. fiolding, is entitlod to the greatest credit for the |manner in which the cantata was produced.
