STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tlic many friends of Mr Bert Haslam will bi' pleased to learn that he has received an appointment as a Go vernment stud groom at Waipukurau. Bert leaves Stratford by the mail train on Monday morning'. A Midhirst resident has been summoned for smoking on the Stratford station platform. Mr Campbell, the stationmasier, requested him to refrain from smoking on the platform, but ignring th.j request of the siationmastcr and persisting in smoking, the only coune left was to issue a summons against him. Some short time ago the newspapers of the colony intimated that smoking on railway platforms was to be strictly prohibited, and stationmasters had been instructed to that effect.

A rather serious accident happened last Saturday to Lissa Shotter, the youngest daughter of Mr John Shotter, of Radnor road, Midhirst. Her brother, who was playing with a bow and arrow, fired, and the arrow struck his sister in the eye, inflicting a serious wound. The injured child was at once taken to Dr. Paget, of Stratford, who temporarily tended to the injured eye, but instructed the parents to take the child to Dr. MacKenzie, eye specialist, Wellington, as the injury was a serious one. Mrs Shotter took her daughter to Wellington on Monday, and 1 am glad to learn that Dr. Mackenzie does not think that the sight will be destroyed. The Stratford District High School closed on Friday for a week, being the usual quarterly vacation. In the Town Hal', on Friday evening, Mr J. A. Gilruth, M.R.C.V.S., Chief-Veterinarian, delivered an address under the auspices of the Taranaki Agricultural Society. The Mayor Mr (N. J. King presided)); and there was a large attendance of the farming community. The address was listened to with great interest, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer.

The following- paragraph from this week's "Truth" will be of interest to Stiatfordites: "Mr W. H. Johnson, of the 'T'aranaki College,' left by the Corinthic last week for Edinburgh, where he intends to study medicine. Before leaving ho asked "Truth" to express his thanks to Messrs Baskerville of the- Terrace ,school, and A. Gourley, of the To, Aro school, for making his tay in Wellington so exceedingly pleasant. Mr Johnson is .n oil Otago University Uugbyite, and has also represented Taranaki for some years, having been connected with the Taranaki Education Board since his removal to that centre." Stratford will no doubt be pleased to know that the District High School is better known in Wellington as "The Taranaki College," but "Truth" is in error re Mr Johnson representing Taranaki province as a Rugby footballer, and, moreover, Mr Johnson, who recently resigned his position of first assistant in our District High School, was with us only 18 months.

On Saturday morning, Messrs Okey, Stanley, Anibury, and Webster, of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, inspected Messrs J. Lawless and Co.'s thoroughbred Powerful. .They expressed a high opinion of Powerful, considering that he would be a great acquisition to Taranaki. and asked Messrs Lawless and Co. to parade him at New Plymouth. On Friday night a concert and dance was held in the liat.ipjko school in aid of the school funds. The chairman of tbe committee presided, and the seating accommodation was taxed to ns utmost-capacity. The Kia Ora minstreJ troupe, under under the coonductorship of Mr Fred Anderson rendered a splendid programme, and there is no doubt that their services will now frequently b« required. For the concert and dance Messrs J. Bilski and C. McMillan supplied the music. The Rata-nko School Comuit'ee aen ttebied to the Kia Ora minstrels (Messrs Kehely, Cheffings, Anderson and C. Beleski- for augmenting their funds.
