STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent. An accident which, happily, was unattended with serious results, befell Messrs Ryan, Bleasel, and Mesdames Bianca and Hyde, on Tuesday afternoon. Tho party left Stratford for Toko in a phaeton, l nd when ging down Sangstcr's Hill (a long and very steep hill), about two miles from Toko, the brake failed to hold. The horse started to play up, and the phaeton suffered accordingly, and so did the horse to some slight extent. To Messrs W. Vincent and Harry Collin's, who rendered valuable assistance, the party give hearty thanks. Mr R. W. Blyth gave an address lo the ladies on Tuesday afternoon 011 "Social Impurity." There was a good attendance. In the evening he addressed a rather poorly attended meeting of men in the Town Hall, and had a good hearing-. On Wednesday morning he addressed the boys of the District lligh School. A storekeeper, who is "vera carefu 0' the bawbees," and who served a summons himself on one of his customers, found this morning in the S.M. Court that he has a bit of law to learn yet. Through the help of one of the solicitors present the matter was rectified, but no doubt hewill in the end find that it would have been more in his pocket if be had allowed the proper authorities to do the work for him. Penny wise, pound foolish. On Wednesday evening a Catholic social was held in the Town Hail. These socials have become so popular that on Wednesday the takings at the door amounted to ,£25. With tho amount for tickets sold, etc., the gross takings will probably b: over 2;;o, which will considerably reduce llie parish debt, the object ft r which these socials are intended. Besides the dancers there was a largo crowd of spectators and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The music was under the conductorship of Mr 1-2. Scott, and with him were associated Messrs A. Schodrowski (violin) and W. Nicho'ls (cornet-. During the evening songs were given by several ladies and gentlemen, and an Irish reel was danced by Mr aiid Miss Breen. Extra dance music was played by Mrs Bianca and Miss Dymond. Messrs J. Gwynne and J. D. Malone efficiently carried out the duties of M.C.'s. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Constable Hyde, of Stratford, is at present doing duty in Hawera owing- to the removal of one of the constables there. Owing to an outbreak c.f chickenpox the Mi'.lhirst School Committee deemed it desirable on Tuesday to clcse the school for a fortnight. A football matcn between the Mounted Rilles and the Infantry was played on Thursday afternoon, the latter winning by tj points to' 6. A very pleasing ceremony took place on Thursday morning in the Stratford District High School, when Mr E. H. Clark, who has been appointed instructor cf woodwork to the Wanganui Education Board, was the recipient of two handsome gifts frc m the staff and pupils of tho school. Mi C. D. Sole, chairman of the School Committee, in a happy and appro priate speech, presented Mr Clark with a handsome writing portfolio and a beautiful Morocco leather poc kelbook as a memento from the pupils and staff cf the school, and as a small token of the esteem in which he was held by them. Mr Morrison bore testimony to the excellent work that Mr C'ark had done in the school. -The longer people knew Mr Clark, the better they liked him, and he was only voicing the sentiments of the members of the Taranaki Education Beard when he said that the Board greatly regretted losing the services of Mr Clark. There was no shadow of doubt that Mr Clark had been the mainstay cf the technical work and had spared neither time nor labour to advance his pupils. He heartily wished Mr Clarksuccess in his new appointment. (Applause.) Mr Tyrer, lieadmas'.er, refcrrcc) to the exodus of teachers fri m I aianaki, but said that was easily accounted for as Taranaki teachers now ranked as the best in the colony and their services were eagejjy s. uglit for by ot.hey education hoards. lie hoped that Mr Clark would get on as well as they all wished him, and in a short time he was sure that further promotion would be awaiting him. On Mr Tyrer's call, three rousing cheers wore given for Mr Clark, which showed that the pupils heartily agreed with the sent,l,me"t,s expressed by the speakers. Mr Clark ,who was deeply affected said that he could qily thank them tor the handsome presents which they had given him and for the kind remarks about him and his work that the speakers had made. He spoke highly < f the management of the school under the headmaster, Mr t yrer, and reminded the pupils that the school had gained a splendid reputation throughout New Zealand He advised them to upho'd this reputation, and to "play the gam'-'! both inside and outside of school At t.ie conclusion of his remarks' the pupils stood up in a bodv and gave three more hearty cheers for the'ir popular teacher.. ■ Mr C !? rk , entors upon ,lis new duties en Monday next.
