SYDNEY PEF.SS COMMENTS. Svkxbv, Augtis 2.>. The " Herald" says that Sir Joseph Wards land proposals are an app '- cation of the close settlement principle with a vengeance. It is a method for breaking up big estates, besides which the efforts of preceding politicians we a mere matter of talk. No Government could afford io buy all the land liable to be offered for sale under the pr.sent and poposed legislation. Apirt from that there is not the population m New Zealand which would justify any particularly extravagant alienation of lard fore'osT settlement.
