A deputation waited, on the Minister for Lands urging assistance by way if subsidy in connection with llic proposed tramway system to the Hutt Valley. It was pointed out tli.it the Government had purchased a large a.-ea within the district, and that local b dies interested lost some £SOO by way of rates.
Mr Mb Sab replied that the Government, having taken the place of private 1 Miners by purchising the land, oughi to accept the responsibilities of private owners in respect to rates, and he was <[uite prepared to recommend to Cabinet that in re.-pect to lands purchased as a speculative investment, the Government should be liable to local bodies for rates until the laud was disposed uf. As for a monetary grant he ivas not prepared to recommend that ft is understood the land purchased is in connection with workmen's homes, and when these are established the tenants will bo liable.
