THE ELECTRIC LIGHT.
At the New Plymouth Borough Council meeting on Monday, Mr F. T. BeHrngor, borough solicitor, gave his written opinion that the: Council could not go in for lighting outside the borough, and recommended the matter be brought before the Municipal Conference next week, with a view to obtaining an amendment in the Municipal Corporations Act. Failing this, a special Act would be necessary, and this could not be introduced this session. Mr J, I\. Superintendent of Klectric Lines,'wrote that he could see no objection to supplyng electric light within a reasonable distance from the country road along which the transmission line runs for the supply of electricity to the borough, but no power was given in the Council's license. The Brush Electrical Engineering Company, contractors for the munici-
pal electrical system, asked for the balance of their account, stating that the matters of the turbine governors and bearings mentioned byMr Mestaye.r were receiving attention. The new compensating arrangement for the governors had
been shipped. Attention was again called to the matter of payment for the poles, the manager reiterating that "Mr Mestayer's view of the way
in which the poles should be charged for meant a dead loss of over .(.700.'' Seeing that the Council had a thoroughly good installation, and
the poles were only charged at their true value, and the mistake was clearly a clerical one in the contract schedule, the firm asked for payment of the whole or portion of flic claim. The Electric Lighting Committee submitted the following rccommrriendat -ns:—<■That, ni view of the fact that the Committee aro within measurable distance of a full load on the present plant ,steps be taken to raise a loan to pay off the existing overdraft on electric lighting account, and to provide a further sum of /.5000 to be expended as follows intension electric lighting plant, i-iooo; new line, X'iooo; extension to Breakwater and Vogcllown, .61000; contingencies, total, £sooo.'' 'That the JJrush Company be informed that the Council adheres to its previous resolution and refuses to interfere with the decision of Mr Ale-stayer with reference to payment or e ccinc light p01e.,." « That |lu , J rush Company be informed that the Council cannot sec its way to make them a final payment until" the turbine governors and bearings are working satisfactorily.'' "That the 'l'd street lamps be sold at 30/ each and brackets at 5/ each.' 1 "That the opinion „f the'borough solicitor m connection with electric lighting •utside the borough be refenvd to V 1" C ',"" ln! viln ;| ri ''iu'est that sieps be Mk,c,,. to ( , m ,h'e the, committee [0 extend the installation outside the borough." These matters will come uo for discussion at the adjourned m e.,ti n <> of the Council on Wednesday night.''
