THE RAILWAY DEVIATION.
Mr C. Holm Blss, District Engineer, writing in connection with railway deviation matters, has informed the New Plymouth Borough Council that the Department would lie recommended to provide a footbridge on Waimanu street and give access to it if the present access to the beach is destroyed; Buller street will be graded to the full width, and the Department will indemnify the Council against all claims for com„pensation for alterations to levels so far as the Department's land is concerned; bridges erected at Hobson, Eliot and Govet streets will be the full road width. The Department will provide a right of way under the new railway briclgs to be erected over the llenui stream; but cannot undertake to provide a subway at Autere st. if necessary a level crossing for foo' passengers can be given, the provision of a station near Hobson street is still under consideraton, the portions of Leach and Hobson streets now occupied by the railway the Department will be recommended to hand back to the Council; the application that the present line fiom YYatson street to Paynter's lane and the bridge over the Hcnui be handed over to tho local bodies can only be consider-id when the deviation is completed, and the Council should then renew its application.
The Council then discussed the Waimanu street matter, several remarking that the access'to the beach by Cover street" was now almost ruined by the encroachment of the sea, It was mentioned that Waimanu street might be taken W the Government,

The Mayor pointed out that by the closing of Waimanu street and the carrying away of the Gover street street access, there would be no means at all of reaching the beach east of the Huatoki stream. |he protest will be made.
