SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") None of the local horses managed to earn a winning at the National meeting. The weights for the New Zealand Cup made their appearance on MonJay last, and some of the adjustments have Caused a fair amount of criticism.
Pantutu is now favorite for the Cup at S to 1. Multifid, the other local candidate is at 16 to 1. Paritutu's weight came as a bit of a surprise to many, for with only 8.5 the C'astor gelding must be considered very well in and, if landed at the post fit and well, he will be a hard one to beat. Multifid, also, is nicely treated, and if he could reproduce his Auckland Derby form, Mr 0 linen's horse would possess a great chance. From present indications, it is probable that there will be ,u comparatively small field to contest the New Zealand Cup this year.
The Auckland Racing Club has decided to increase the stakes for the ensuing year by £IBOO over the previous year. It was also decided to strike out pony races from all future meetings.
A Southern paper states that the Canterbury Jockey Club intend making substantial additions to the stakes for the Cup meeting. Comfort was disposed of to Mr S. Brown at the close of the Grand National Meeting. E. Russell returned home last week with Waikato, who looks a bit light after the facing he has had at Kiccarton and the trainer is undecided whether to journey to Marton, as the gelding appears to be in need of a spell. Although Waikato failed to gain a first or second at the meeting, the handicapper did not allow the weight to drop, and on the last day's racing allotted the horse four pounds more than he carried the previous day. The weight adjuster must hold a high cpinon of St. Hippo's son.
Sammy (Sou'-Wcstcr—Puss), who won a double at the W'anganui Hunt Club meeting last week, is evidently a fairly good animal. In his second race he beat Haerekimoa, a winnei at the National meeting. Sammy is trained by C. Birkett at W'averley. Irish Rifle, who won the Open Handicap, is by Muskctrv—Element, and therefore a half-brother to Shrapnel.
Frisco, by Ear Wig—Placid, one of Tilly's team, is spoken of as likely to play a prominent part in this season's racing. The Marton Jockev Club has rereived splendid nominations for the forthcoming meeting. Scveilal New Zealand Cup candidates figure <,n the list, and, should they start, additional interest will be taken in the fixture.
