THE OPUNAKE RAILWAY.
A very largely attended meeting was held at Opunake on Monday in connection with tho railway question, There must have been between 150 and 200 persons presont. Mr Dudley was in the chair and the meoting was a most enthusiastic one. Stratford had representatives in Mr King (the Mayor) and Mr Astbury. Eltham was represented by the Mayor (Mr Tayler), Messrs Hill and Parrott, and the Hon. W. Carncross. The following resolutions were carried: "That this meeting regrets the resolution passed at the public meeting called by tho Hawera Chamber of Commerco, on August 6th, as it is likely to delay the construction of the line, and hereby asks the said Chamber to take the necessary steps to resoind the resolution passed on that date, and that they be asked to support this league in urging the Government ,to immediately construct tho line as near as possible on what is known as the old survey route."—(Dudley—Lambie.) " That this meeting is strongly opposed to any attempt to divert the route of the railway from that originally laid out and reserved." Votes of thanks were passed to the visiting speakers, and a hearty vote of thanks to the delegates from the Patoa Harbor Board and Council, in supporting the Opunake delegate at the meeting at Hawera, and in supporting the Opunake-Eltham route. The resolutions were carried unanimously only one voice being recorded against the second resolution, A meeting of delegates was afterwards held at which it was resolyed to send a thoroughly representative deputation to wait upon the Government early in the session.— Eltham "Argus."
