The annual dinner of the Chamber of Commerce to meet members of Parliament and discuss the needs of t!ie district, m view of the coming sessionwas held to-niglit. The function proved a great success. The president (Mr J. B. Maefarlane), in his opening address, pointed to the need for rcvi. «ion of the tariff, and said he was astounded at the statement by Cut otns Department that a general revision w is not contemplated, and that only an alteration of duties on certain articles was intended. Dealing with, the reciprocity qneston, he advocated reciproci' trade throughout the British Empire, and said many of them were c inverts to Mr Chamberlain's propositi. It would be unwi-e, he thought, a: prelent, to support a reciprocal treaty with any country not under the British tl m Dr. Bimford spike of the urgent necessity for the completion o f the North Islaod Main Truuk line at the earliest possible moment. It was a great national work. Mr Masse/, M.H.R.. in course of hu retnirVs, said it was the duty of Parliament to insist on getting d'tails of public expenditure. Speeches were also delivered by other Auckland members and the Mayor.
