CHEATING ALARM IN WELLINGTON. rEU I'IiESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, August 8. Tho 'Tost" to-night states that a rumour calculated to alarm Wellington people has been floating through the city during the past day or two. It is alleged that the Chinaman, who has practically monopolised the retail fruit trade of Wellington, has his almond eye on other (hi ngs. It h stated that j Chinese contemplate competing with Europeans as general merchants on a large scale by forming a strong company. A gentleman familiar with all the stirs in commercial circles here ventures an opinion that the report about the new yellow invasion may have simple explanation. An auctioneering firm has decided to relinquish its fruit and produce department, and a company is to be formed to take it over. The share list will be opened to the public, and it is believed that market gardeners and fruitgrowers will be the chief shareholders. The market gardeners in Hie vicinity of Wellington are Chinese, but the fruitgrowers are Europeans.
