GOVERNMENT GRANTS. The Cuum.i endorsed the resolution fonvardc ' <;}' the L olbngwood County Council, urging that the Government should pay over public works grants to local bodies so that the money could be spent in the summer months. A LOAN DIFFICULTY. A difference of opinion having arisen among settlers interested in the raising of a loan of y v :ioo for metalling the Junction Road at l'urangi, some of them evidently preferring to have other access to the railway, the Chief Engineer v rote that he had cancelled the authorisation, and the money would not now be available. —No action taken. Davis wrote that he objected to the Council's letter stating that he (Mr Davis) had rescued two cattle from the ranger without paying the necessary fee of two shillings. He had tendered payment of halt a sovereign, but the ranger declined it, as he had no change. As Mr .(ones (the ranger) owed the writer some money, :: was arranged that the fee 'should be "squared" that way. He advised the Council to appoint a ranger who "had no petty spite to work." C *. O'Sullivan said Mr Davis had toM him these facts, and seemed somewhat mollified when told that he was not the only settler on th road whose cows w-ere taken that day. Mr Davis said that Jones admitted the proffering of the money. The Council agreed that there was O'' necessity for straining the law to s ich a point that the ranger should stickle for the exact amount of the ees. ~ , Cr. O'Sullivan objected to the ranger working outside the Mokau rid■ni;. If the other ridings wanted to k'cp stock off roads, let them apncint a ranger of their own.
