DIARY OF REV. HONE PAPAHIA. ( 1 ranslaled by S. Percy Smith, Esq., F.R.G.S.) Continued.) May si.—We went to New Plymouth to see Archdeacon Cole, ana returned at i p.m. to Tarere-ari, where we found six people housebuilding. We did not pray with them, but had some conversation, and then went on to Te Kaipakojiako at 2.30 p.m., and held prayers. After that to Nga-puke-turua, where were only two people, the rest being away engaged at work for the pakehas. We slept at Owae, Waitara. May 22. —Very stormy and wet. We came back to Urenui, where 1 was seized with a bad headache and much pain.
May 23.—A fine day. A letter received from the Rev. Mr Hawken, which I answered at once; after wards we went to Maitai-whatu, ant found three people there, one an in valid named Werokino. After hav ing prayers, we returned to Urcnui My illness continues.
May 24,—Ascension Day, Morning prayers at the house. To Onacio at noon, where we had prayers, 13 people being- assembled. The conversation of these people regarding the Gospel is satisfactory. May 25.—Went to l'uke-aruhe. had evening prayers with f'B people'. Many greetings, and conversation as to the dead (Maori custom) and welcome to the Gospel, Dr. l'etei Park and his wife were there. May 26. A fine day. Returned to the pah at Urenui, where we had ptayers with a blind and lame invalid.
May 27 (Sunday).—Held service at n a.m. at Waha-pakapaka; 50 present, and at 3 p.m. 55. A mectig held by .the pepole to make a combined effort to build a meeting house at Onaero, to be used as a church by the ministers. A good deal of talk about Christianity today. A collection amounting to £2 was made. Returned at dark to urenui.
May 28.—Very heavy rain during the night. We two left at 2 a.m. and reached Waipapa at 4 a.m.! ivhere we had prayers with nine peopie. Much lain and mist. Got to u aitara at 7.40 a.m., thence by train to Inglewood, and at 1 p.m. by coach or I e Tarata, a small village belonging to Tainui and Iliroa. These people have been Christians for some time, notwithstanding their few numbers. In the evening arrived Dr. - eter Park and his wife. Congregation of eight.
May 29.—Rained all day. We all !nT| t0 i I,Ur: " lgi ' arriving at i p.m., had a war m welcome; the doctor of the body as well as doctors of souls.
May 30.—At Purangi, at 8.20 a.m. sacrament, of which 10 partook,there being 36 present. Collection, 40. May 31.—We returned from Purangi. i-ound no one at -Nga-rau-erua, so went on to Waitara, and to Urenui by 7 p.m.
June I.—At Urcnui. No work today. Much rain and cold, felt very unwell with much pain. June 2.—Felt better. Engaged writing.
-Line 3 (Sunday).-At Waipapa, "■3O a.m., prayers, 25 people. The people here are very good. There Was one invalid, a madman, but he not disturb us. 3 p.m. prayers congregation 22. We went to 1 e i cropero to sleep. June 4- Went to New Plymouth and slept there.
June 5. Went to Rahotu, arrived 3 P.m. At 0 p.m. went to Rautini, and had prayers 111 the evening, ->0 people. A warm welcome from these people.
