Considerable interest was taken 111 the meeting of the football strength of the t\\« pruvmces. Uniy three matches uad previously been played be- ' ■een the two proemc'-,, eali siti having a win to their credit, whilst '.he last match ended in a draw. On Saturday a steady south west wind Mas blowing down the field. Winning the toss, Taranaki took the benefit of this advantage in the arst spell. Though they were attacking nearly the whole of the spell, their scoring backs were not so dangerous as had been anticipated. This may have been partly due to Mynott being a good deal shaken up at an early stage of the game, but the tackling of the Otago men was mainly responsible for the, visitors' failure to cross the line. The only score recorded in the firs' half was a goal from a mark. Tin second spell had scarcely been started when ihe deficit was wipet off. This roused the visitors for brief space, but they seemed to tire, and the local men ran ovei them, until Mynott, Cameron and Abbott seizing an opening, the latter secured and ran round undei the posts and scored a try, which was converted. The local men canu away at once and put on anothei try, eventually winning the game b\ u points to 8. The game was an interesting one 10 watch, but can scarcely be said to iiave been a scientific exhibition ol rootball. Uad Taranaki made less use of the touchline 111 the first spell, they might have fared better. There was a lack of combination among the local men, who played together as a team for the first time. Frewin, the Taranaki scrum half, had a rib broken in the first spell, and his place was taken by I'eter \Yard. Dougherty, the Otago live-eighths, had his shoulder put jut in the second spell, and Booth ■ the full back), going up to fill the gap, gave the visitors their chanceto score their try, for there was no full back to pass. The above game was played in Eltham on Saturday afternoon in showery weather, and resulted in a draw, neither bide seoiing. The game was interesting and even throughout.

On Saturday last, two fifteens, a senior and a junior, came from iithe Stratford District IJigli School to play two teams troni the New Plymouth High School. The juriioi match was played in the morning, and resulted in a regular run over tor the New Plymouth boys, the score at the end of the game being 00 points to nothing. For the winners tries were gamed by Ilurle (3), Osborne (4), Stead (5), Brown U), Blyde (1), Gray (i). Four goals were placed by Osborne and two by Stead. The senior match, which was played in the afternoon, was a very hard and interesting game all liuough. The local boys went at it from the start, and shortly after the game had begun Bayly scored in the corner from a fine passing rush, in which Whitaker and Grant took part. No goal resulted from the kick. The remainder of the spell was a succession of fast, open work, among the forwards, varied by an occasional passing rush. The visitors rallied several times, and more than once Jockar and Bolar nearly scored. The local forwards, however, were not to be denied, and a fine dribbling rush, from which Okey scored, was the result. Ellis placed a fine goal from the kick. There was no further score in the game, the local boys winning by 8 points to nil. Coming to individual play, Uhitaker was the best back on the ground, playing a plucky game with great judgment. Of the other bovs, Ellis and Smith, in the backs, and •Juilliam, Okey, and Tunbridge, in the forwards, were about the best. J ticker and Bolar showed up best for :he visitors.
