The Tongahoe road, from ilawcra, is a road in name tor prouably ten miles, in reality it is a road for only live. The reason: the Lltiiam townspeople have always evinced a liveiy and practical interest, in the welfare of their backblock settlers, and have furthered their interests in every way. iiawera lias ilone so, but only spasmodically, i There is keen rivalry between these two provincial towns for the trade ol the enormous stretches of virgin country lying behind them, but one town helped tue settlers and got the business, while the other waited for • the business, the help to follow. Unless it be that Hawera trusts to the repeating of the tortoise and hare story, they can hardly expect to now win the race to Pipiriki.' There is a lesson for New Plymoutu in the above experience. When are our townspeople going to learn it.' AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. A big Axemen's Carnival is to be held at Christchurch early next year, in connection with the International Exhibition. The meeting is to be conducted on behalf of the Exhibition authorities by the New Zealand Axemen's Association, the headquarters of which is at Eltham. Mr A. Hansen, the well known Eltham starter, has been appointed to take charge of the gun at the Exhibition meeting, and in all probability the Eltham handicapper and one or two other officials will also be appointed to carry out the actual work of controlling what will piobabdly be ilie argest axemen's and sawyers' sports meeting ever held in the colony, the Eltham carnival not excepted. No body of men is more competent to superintend such a meeting than the executive of the New Zealand Axemen's Association, and. it may be taken for granted that the Exhibition authorities will not have any reason to regret their choice. The holding of this gathering will greatly enhance the interest in the sport throughout the colony, as, coupled with the valuable prizes offered at the Eltham Carnival and elsewhere, it is certain that most of the leading axemen in Australasia, if not some of the American champions, will be enticed "across the water."
