The Taranaki backs brought off some magnificent combined play generally initiated by Hunter and Alynott, aud supplemented by the fa-t tricky work of Cameron, Abbott an] Dive. The Wanganui forwards played a great game, and taken all round were superior to the Taranaki vanguaiV, who played to their hacks on every •possible occasion. W anganui were without the service* of the scrum half, Fremont, and the '• crack forward Guscott, Meuli and MacDonald filling the vacancies. THE PLAY. A few minutes after the start Holland, the Wanganui five-eighth, broke a small bone of his ankle and retired, Mitchell replacing him. A little ae r, Murray, their hooker, was injured also and retired, being replaced by Wainwright. The Wanganui forwards became j aggressive from the start, and showed their superiority to the visitors' forwards. The match was mostly Taranaki ba:ks against Wanganui forwards. The play of the Taranaki backs was very fast, and remarkable for trickery and finesse, Waagauut's rear division being at times non-plussed by the quick changes in attack. Play was fairly even in the opening stages. Hunter and Mynott made several sharp dashes, but the tackling was sound. Mitchell, the Wanganui reserve man, did splendid spoiling work, and Corby, the wing-forward, executed several fast dribbles down the field. The Wanganui forwards attacked strongly, and the backs put in a strong passing rush, Craig being collered at the corner, near the Taranaki line.
A little later Takarangi knocked on when going under the posts. After some fast, even play on the Taranaki lue, Meuli passed out, but Pine sent a bad pass to Takarangi, Abbott intercepting, and racing down the field scored between the posts, Hardgreaves converting. Tiranaki] 5 Wanganui q The Wanganui forwards again attacked, but Hardgreaves relieyed with a big kick to the centre, where Hunter passed to Abbott, and the latter transferred to Cameron, who dodged over l'he kick failed. Wanganui continued the attack at the Taranaki end till half time, which was called with the score as above. Play was exceedingly fast 111 the second spell, the Wanganui forwards playing with great dash, but their work was counterbalanced by the cleverness of the Taranaki backs. After some tight play, Cameron received a pass from Dive, and after a line, fast, dodgy run, scored at the corner. The kick again failed. Tarau .ki Wanganui ,j • Besoming, Hunter made several of his lightning dashes, but was always well collared. A great feature of the Taranaki play was the fa'-reaching line kicks by Hardgreaves.
