ELECTRIC LIGHTING.
RE-AI!RANGEME.\T OF STREET I LIGHT.-!. ADDITIONAL AUG LAMP. The recommendation of the Eh-clnc Lighting Committee eamc before the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday night. Cr. Brooking moved, ami Cr Monleath seeonileil, that material be ordered as follows: 20!) poles of various sizas, estimated to cost .€100; and 301) tons hire copper wire, estimated to cos! £:)ol). The Mar ■;• -aid that its Chairman of th' Lmh.mi'C Committee, he wished to draw the Council's attention to the posiiion. The Council had authority to or iw u»n overdraft to the extent of anoth r £5,0011, and ha thought this preferable to getting another loan at present. There would lie further expenditure on electric lighting, and it was not yet unite clear what repairs to the waterworks and extensions would cost. The septic tank needed attention, for no one could say it was satisfactory. Therefore he thought it useless to go b fo 'e the ratepayers for a loan until they knew exactly how much was required, if they could scrape along for the present on overdraft.
Cr Brooking said the Council hud no poles to cin'mue its lighting system. IJIe mentioned that the Vogeltown suburb would probably require streetlighting, and this service could not be liven until new poles and wire arrived. It was for the C unicil to say whether or not they should actively push on ihe electric lighting or allow the Gas Company to cut the Council out. The 1750 would not be required all at once, and fciJoO of it would hardly be winter! lor another six months. '1 he' Mayor said he only wanted to warn the Council abaul the financial pi 5 lion.
Cr Wilson moved that the requisition for this material be deferred until the Carringtou lioad Hoard decides in favor of electric lighting. The immediate requirements of the. borough could be served by bringing into use a number of poles erected iu places where there seems little hope of the current being used.
The amendment was lost, the Mayor and Crs Wilson and Co'.lis voting for it. The material will be ordered.
It was decid.'d that the following extra street lamps be erected -. Lemon s reet lewa en Liardet and Govcr st eets, 1 ; Cimeron street between Gilbert and Eliot streets, 1 ; Avenue road from Cameron street to boundary, 2; l'owderhaui street bridge, 1; Fendarvcs street an 1 Cnrrington Road corn r, 1; Fulfo'd street between Kobe and Dawson streets (Spiles re. qiim dj 11 liulteel street between Role and UaTsan streets, 1; H'ne streit and Culli'.l 1 road (waiting fir pi'es). 1; Queen ttroct opposite Ycung s'reet (pole required) 1; Eliot and < ill streets. 1; total 11 Cr Brookini', and Cr Collis moved, that the following alterations be made in connection with the present street lan.ps: The pole at the corner of Pei darves street and Liardet street to le mo.ed; thj lamp at junction of Can in,'ton and Victoria roads to rais d; to move to opposite side of Mine street ihe light at fie junction of lime and Weymoi th streets; the arc lamp to ho nil v.'d from Eliot street to junitiinor King and Egmont streets and replaced with two iiicamh souls.
