PETROLEUM.
On Friday Mr M. Frascr, one of thdirectirs of the Taranaki Petro'eun Cimp.ny, and Mr t). C. Fair, tie mai.ajcr, visited the Carrington Roid and tested the oil indications on M. Pet h's farm. Operations were com iner ce I at the same spot as on Weinc, day, and the same holes were in sp.cted. Agr?y substance was found to be oozing out from between the hard filspar rocks, resembling decayed crystals. This grey matter smelt strongly of petroleum. Just below this was found exactly tho same stratum as is found on the Motur j,i beach where the oil outerops. Mr Fair has shown a samp'e of the grey matter to a News repre entative and there is no doubt of the presence' of the petroleum odour. Tho water test gave the colours vory plainly. Mr Fair estimates that at this point oil will be struck from 700 feet to 80n feet less depth than at Moturoa. He is highly enthusiastic about this finl, which, ho says, is going to be a great thing for the Company an d for the disdict.
