ANXIETY FOE MISSING VESSELS. PBB PBESB ASSOCIATION. GISBOENE, July 20. A gentleman riding to town to-nigh: roports having seen what he believed was a rocket fired in the direction of Wainui beach.
Nothing in confirmation is yot obtainable, but the freezing company's steamer Koraro, with, the manager (Mr Cedorwell), and Capt. Sowell (the Marine Superintendent), has gone out to investigate, and is not expected to return until a late hour. The coastline is enveloped in thick fog, and Pakarae station has no information of vessels passing either way to-day. The Freezing Company's steamer Kotare was expected from Auokland to-day.
The break in the East Cape wires has caused a good deal of anxiety, owing to the lack of information as to the movements of shipping. Laaeb. Tho steamer Eacoro lias jmt returned after a fruitless search off the Wamut beach, but the fog is so thick that practically nothing can be seen md the vessel had to uso groat precautions when cruising about. Returning to port, the anchor was onst for a time, to make sure of picking np the leading lights. Tatapouri station repirts bavins soen nothing. The mrstirv. therefore, will not be cleared up until the morning. Nothing further has been heard regfding the wreck of the Aotea nad tho S r Tfenry. The latter was taking slm st exactly tie same course as the ill-fated scow Whakapai, wreoked in tho same place a few yean ago in tho same way. Tho natives were in rerdiness to dash in and try and resctt; tho survivors, b it thoy did not get close emu-h to shore.
