PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, July 12. The ground on B ittery Hill-in the Botanical Gardens, near Kelburne kiosk, is being examined with a viow to selecting an area most suitable for a new observatory. The old site was taken for the burial ground of the late Premier.
The police have decided to prosecute any person using offensive or indecent language on football grounds, and ask the co-operation of the right thinking section of the community.
Joe Ping, a Chinaman, was to-day fined £IOO, subsequently reduced to £25, for having in his possession two onucos of opium A somowhat unique compliment to the late Mr P. Garvey was paid to the momory of the late Chief Gaoler of Wellington by the male and female prisoners who were under Mr Garvey's charge. The inmates of the two soctions of the gaol not only sent wreaths for tho funeral, but also sent letters of condolence to the deceased gaoler's family. Of the hundreds of letters which have been received since Mr Garvey's death, the family has the greatest appreciation of the tributes of respect from prisoners.
A number of transfers in the lighthouse service are taking place. A. | Hansen, principal keeper at Pencarrow, is to go to Tiritiri, replacing Wakefield who is to take charge of Cape Palliser, vice Mclvor, who is to be transferred t» Puysegar Point. Voyle from Cape Maria Tan Dieman will be new principal keeper at Ponearrow, and will be succeeded in the far north by Parks, from French Pass. The latter station is to be placed in charge of Berry from the Nuggets.
