Tile Wellington Uacing Club were favored with lnaguilicent weather for the opening day of their winter meeting, and the attendance for an off-day was excellent. Prominent sportsmen from all parts of tin.' colony were present in strength. The course was heavy, consequent upon the heavy rain of the preceding afternoon. The racing generally was interesting, and keen finishes eventuated in several instances. The big race was robbed of interest by the accident to Slow Tom and Irish. The amount put through the machine totalled £11,152, including Cl,:iSs on double niacin! e, as agaiust lU Ml put through at the corresponding meeting of lasl year. The live investors on the winning double, Stcepl' and Parliamentary Handicap, received £2-m 10s each.

Wellington Steeplechase Handicap : liongoa I, Mocassin 2, Phyfair 3 Also started: Slow Tom and Trish. The Held kept well together until at the six furlong post on| the last time round, when Slow Tom, who was fencing splendidly, fell, and barely another furlong had been covered before Irish came to grief, Playfair ran off on Hearing the straight, leaving Mocassin and liongoa to fight out the issue. Winter Hurdle Handicap : Shrapnel 1, Exmoor 2, Monaripic 3. Scratched : Irish, Cuiragno. Bounce fell at the first obstacle, and Pushful cannoning into Magnificent when-the barrier went up, took no further part in the race. Kxninor, Shrapnel, and Moiiarquc singled themselves out in the struggle for supremacy. Exmoor was in the lead until minuting the top bend, where Shrapnel usurped Ins position, and stalling oil' a challenge from the Porirua horse m the straight, won comfortably by a good length.
