BEAT NEWTOWN 11 TO 5
Received 7, 8.30 p.m. Sydxky, July 7. The City Football Club (Auckland) opened its Australian tour to-day, meeting Newtown at Sydney. The weather was fine and there were about seventeen thousand spectator present. A. Nicholson, Harris, Frayer, Todd and Magee stood out of the City team Auckland won the toss and played with a fresh westerly wind. Play wa> fairly even for the greater part of tht first half, with occasional flashes by the visitors, which took the locals ali their time to prevent scoring. The visitors were excellent in forward play but were deficient in the back division if Smith be excepted. The latter gol in some fine runs. A few minutebefore half time Newtown were beinj hard pressed in home territory, the Auckland forwards playing dashingly. Plant secured from the pack and darted over. Young converted,' City 5, Newtown 0. Before the whistle went, the visitors were running all over the Newtown forwards. Seeling fell over the line but Nicholson failed to add the extra points. Auckland 8, Newtown 0. In the second spell, Newtown made play willing. Almost immediately after the kick-off they scored off a brilliant run by Russell, who beat the whole of the opposing side. Hay kicked a goal. City 8, Newtown 5. The Aucklanders were now hotly presied G. Tyler and Wood twice getting th( m out of difficulty. After a long period of uninteresting play, Smith gave a file exhibition of his speed, for which he was cheered. Luscombe only managed to shore him into touch as a try was immiennt. Near time a good piece of passing enabled Little to score a try, but llagee's kick was a poor one. The game ended. City 11, Newtown 5. SATURDAY'S GAMES. (Special to News.) lIAWEBA I. v. ELTHAM I. Hawera I. defeated Eltham I. at Eltham by 12 to 3. For Hawera, Goodwin scored two tries, McNiven one, and Coleman kicked a penalty goal Johnson scored for Eltham. PATEA I. v. WAIMATE I. Palea seniors defeated Waimate seniors at Patea by 3 points to nil. The game was very fast, Patea having the best of it, the forwards, particularly, playing a very fine game. C. Burke scored during the last three minutes. OKAIAWA 111. v. PATEA 111. Okaiawa thirds forfeited to Patea thirds.
