Two hotel bars in Thames street have been let as shops. INVERCARGILL ANGBY WITH ITSELF. IRVBECABOIIL, July 1. [ Invercargill canio under No-Licensa at 10 p.m. last night. One hotel i closed at 9 o'clock. There were some some noisy demonstrations, ohoering, 1 and the singing of Auld Lsng Syne, j etc., and many people were on the streets out of curiosity, although the . night was bitterly cold. Several of . the hotels will bo turned to other uses, ; and the newspapora are full of furniture sales, so that accommodation for visitors will be considerably curtailed. Meantime, the opinion is pungently expressed that if a vote could be taken now, the majority of ten, by which licenses were abolished, would be reversed. Invercargill has had half a century of licensed traffic in liquor and its peoplo are, and havo been, law. ibiding and peaceable. It. is now stated on good authority that there are many sly-grog shops springing up. The local browcrs have orccted stores on the confines of the electorate from which to supply householders and _ othors.
