At the Hawke's Bay Winter meeting recently concluded, several accidents occurred. In the first race of , the meeting, which consisted of only [ four starters, Lurcher was the first to dislodge his rider, and immediately afterwards No Shot and Sleepwell came to grief. Lawry, the rider of No Shot, had his collar-bone badly hurt, and Watt, who had been riding Sleepwell, mounted No Shot, and secured second place, but failed to draw the weight, and Lurcher was awarded second honours. A Napier correspondent states that Sleepwell was so seriously iujured that it is unlikely the mare will ever sec the post again.

Gold Seal must have made considerable improvement uuder Percy Johnston's tuition, as it was state 1 recently that Gold Keef's son could not get beyond a mile. Sir Lancelot was best known as the sire of Sir Geraint, Sir Tristram, Sir Percivale and Gawain I The death was reported from Auckland on Saturday of Annette (winner of the Great Northern Guineas). The filly succumbed to an attack of inflamation. Marshal Soult has been retired from the turf, and his name will, in future, ficure among the sires of the season. |*lt is reported that A Julian, the well-known horseman, has been engaged to do the riilingjfor F. Higgot's stable at the Hutt.

Exmoor is the popular fancy for the Grand National Hurdles, and should the Grafton gelding be in the same form at Eiccarton as he was in Auckland he will probably win. D. J. Price, who went to Sydney with Sturshoot, Melodeon, Savoury, and Chivalry, is located at Donnelly's stables at ltandwirk. The V.B.C. Grand National Hurdle race lakes place on Saturday next.

By a printer's error in last week's notes Multlid was described as a bay instead of a brown coll.

Slow Tom is reported to be looking remarkably well, and should have something to say in the decision of the Grand National Steeplechase next mouth.
