LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Northern Company's s.s. Harawa goes into dock at Auckland for overhaul on Monday. Danny, the month of July the Ngapuhij will take up the Earawa's running. At Whiteley Church to-morrow evening the Rev, T. G. Brooke will continue his series of monthly addresses to young people, the subject to be dealt with on Sunday night being " Young Men and Athletics " or " The Glory of young is their Strength." _ Undoubtedly the finest show of ribbons at 6d per yard can be seen in Morey and Son's window to-day, The millinery, which is also displayed, is the finest lot yet imported, and the prices will speak for themselves Trimmed hats worth 355, 45s and 63s going at 18s 6d each.
The Taranaki Poultry Society is considering a proposal from the Hawera Society to institute "West Coast Fanciers' Cups" for competition at the shows in the Taranaki district, tho cups to be offered at the different shows in trurn.
The Taranaki Poultry Society's Annual Show should bo well attended to-day at the Drill Hall. The Show is well worth seeing, Mr Hooker gives exhibitions of plucking and dressing poultry. There are -numerous strange birds and animals on show, and the big cake full of coins is returning investors good dividends. Captain Hood, ono of the most enthusiastic poultry fanciers in Taranaki, is importing some White Orpingtons from Mr Murray Lindner, England, the largest breeder of this strain in the world, The addition of this new blood should be of considerable benefit to poultry in the district. Beautifully-made costumes, ready-to-wear, in all the latest fashionable shades and styles, aro offered at Miss .Retford's, Devon streot. Ladies arc asked to call and have a look at them, even if thoy do not intend purchasing. Such, goods as these aro not likely to remain long in the shop The enjoyable dinner last night in the Drill Hall was duo in no small measure to the excellent catering of Messrs Angus and Thomson, of Now Plymouth. The viands wero of excellent quality, well served, and in abundance, whilst the attention was all that could be desired. This firm has made a provincial reputation for its catering, and the name will not suffer
as long as the arrangements are carried out in the manner displayed last night. Something well worth noticing : Casscll's magazine for June Ist is a wonderful sixpeunywortk. It contains 130 pages, probably more than any other magazine published at the price, and it is beautifully produced, and crowded with illustrations. It is not possible to imagine a person complain, ing of the value giyen in stories, information and illustrations, in the June " Casscll's." How such a budget can be produced in the superior manner of this June number for the nimble sixpence, is beyond our comprehension. Tho number is on sale at the booksellers.
Despite the extreme inclemency of the weutker last night, there was a good attendance at the capital entertainment in the Theatre Royal by the World-wide Pantoscope Company. The special merit of the company's moving pictures lies in their wide range and subject, of the great clear, ness with which they are depicted on the large screen. The latter result is due to the strength of the lantern used, the company having its own dynamo for the generation of the clectri* light. The "star" pictures and those in which the livliost interest is manifested, are those depicting scenes in the life of the late Premier,
and the last scene of his earthly pageant—his funeral, The company will give its last exhibition this afternoon at 2 o'clock, when popular prices, adults Is and children (id will be charged. This arrangement should be a popular one, ahko with those townspeople who have not yet seen this latest manifestation of the kinomatograph art, aad with our country friends who make- Saturday their day in town,
