IN MEMORIAM.

And art tliou gouc from fame and place t' Thou who didst long command, The legal destinies to trace, Of tins fair, favoured land. Wliat wondrous power to organise, To keep a framing band, The liero of the southern skies, Nor thought the time at hand, To travel o'er the lonely bourne, And leave this bustling scene, Leave many friends behind to mourn, The man who once was seen To rule, command, command to rule, In each detail of thought, And harness every social school With brainy, cunning thought. Seddon, Farewell! And hast thou gone from fame and place ? From usefulness and strife, Such energies' forced toiling pace Must surely shorten life. 'Tis true we did not all agree With ev< r.• purpose high, Bui -■ i-iiiess now we see Will o'er ouf spirits lie. The startling news, astonishment Alike to friends and foes, Will herald in the tidings sent To sum up the nation's woes. We lojk back at the long command, And at the huge success, Nor thought of the Angel's hand, Which left one statesman loss. Seddon, Farewell!

Away, away, the baser thought, Away the baser strife, A statesman's rest has come unsought, Ended the useful life. Away, away with difference, Come, brothers, sympathy; Forget all harsher reference, Forget all injury, Forget all mandates, howe'er hard j They pressed upon the soul, And emulate the pure reward ; Thou, too, wilt reach the goal Of rest well earned, of rest obtained. Mistakes we will not see; Richard, we kindly, truly trust That all is well with thee A long last—Farewell. —Thomas N/Bbowne. Hnrimoana.
