After this valuable training to local polities, upon the death of the late Biclmrd Turnbull, 111 181)0, Mr liall-Jonee received a requisition asking him to offer himself for the vacancy, and was elected to

represent Timaru in Parliament in August, 1890. That Parliament was pror#gued in September, and the general election took place at the end of that year. During the short time in Parliament in 1890, Mr Hall-Jones made many friends among the leading members of the House, the late Mr Ballance, Sir John McKenzie, and Sir Grey showing special interest in the .'atest addition to the Liberal party. After the general election, Parliament met in July, 1891. The Atkinson Ministry resigned, and the Ballance Ministry was formed, Mr Hall-Jones being appointed Whip to the Liberal party. Mr Hall-Jones held lhat posi-

| tion until lie resigned in 1893. It was . in February, IS9O, that he was invited ■ to join the Ministry as Minister for Justice. Upon meeting his colleagues , in Wellington, a re-arrangement of 1 portfolios was made, Mr Hall-Jones taking that of Public Works and Minister in charge of the Government Printing Otlice. These portfolios he has continued to hoid since. In June of the same year he became Minister for Marine and Minister iD chargo of the Inspection of Machinery Department, and he has since taken over the administration of the Jioad and Bridges Department, the Lunacy Department, and tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Department.
