A service in memory of the late Premier, in the form of a mass meeting was held at 10.15 this morning at tlie foot of the Cathedral steps in the main street. A very Urge concourse of people attended. There were no addresses The Garrison Bind played the " Dead March in Saul" and "Garland ; .of Flowers," and the] Citizen's Bind "Southwell's Funeral March'" The scene was 'a very impressive one as the populace stood bareheaded. The -Mayor and Councillors and members of the various local bodies were present. Appreciative reference was made at all the churches to the loss of the deceased statesman. His humanitarian legislation was the general theme of remarks. Th ■ ''Dead March in Saul" was played at the majority of the churches, the congregations standing. Messrs Graham, McKenzie, M's.H.B,, the Hon. Mr Trask and others left yesterday for Wellington to attend the funeral, regarding which great inte-est was displayed to-day, people remaining about the telegraph office till definite news arrived.
The Hon. Mr Reeves loft for Westport to attend the Harbour Board meeting, relying oa being in time for the funeral in any rase.
