SALVATION ARMY.

There was a lug crowd last night in the Salvation Army Barracks, where the local corps and sympathisers extended a warm welcome to the new officers, Adjutant and Mrs McCaulay and Lieutenant Jenkins. Mr.). Upton presided, and introduced the guests. Then followed a most interesting and entortaining programme. Mr W. Upton gave a cornet solo in good style, and the Army Band played " Refuge of the Soul " in a style that showed careful attention to detail. The gem of the eve ling was a trombone solo by Mr Smith, until lately a member of the English Royal Artillery Band. " The Better Land " was played in a style tint gave Mr Smith tho right to rank amongst tho finest instrumentalists in the colony. Welcome speeches were made by the senior officers of the local corps, by Mrs Kcnningion for the juniors, by Mrs Williams on behalf of the sympathisers, and by Rev. Brooke, who voiced in the highest terms his appreciation of the work of t!:e Army. Adjutant McCaulay, in replying, referred to his connection with the recent religious revival at Waihi, aud delivered a humorous speech, Mrs McCaulay and Lieut. Jenkins also replied. Refreshments were handed round, and the reception concluded, everyone appearing to have spent a yery enjoyable evening.
