BRITISH POLITICS.
SIR EDWARD CLARK RESIGNS Received 8,10 p.m. London, June 8, Sir Edward Clarke has applied for the Chiltern Hundreds. He informed the electors that he reti-ed because medically warned that he could only continue his political career at serious risk to his health.
[A member of the House of Commons cannot resign his seat unless disqualified [either by the acceptance of a place of honor or profit under the Crown or by some other cause. The stewardship of the Chiltcrn Hundreds (Bodenham, Desborough and Stoke in Buckinghamshire) is held to be such a place, and it is granted to any member who wwhes to resign. As soon as obtained, it is again resigned and is thus generally yacant when required. This practice began only about 1750, but the office, now a sinecure, was once to restrain the robbers who infested the bee-li-forests of the Chiltern hills."!
