One of tho most disastrous flrei that ever occurred in Dunedin broke ont this morning in four storied premises in Cumberland Btreet, owned by the New Zealand Hardware Company. When the alum was given the flames had a firm hold and were shooting out in front. The fire spread rapidly to the rear, and for a time the rater made no impression on the raging furnace within. Some idea of the magnitude may be gathered from the fact that the flames shot straight up to a distance of over 60ft above the parapet of the fourth storey. The firemen'devoted their efforts to saving one storey of the warehouse belonging to the Company on the northern side, and the Corporation power house on the southern v side. They were ultimately successful, but the former, .which was; heavily stocked with ironmongery, caught fire more than once, and was greatly damaged by the falling walls of the main structure. Fortunately there was an absence of wind, or the powerhouse could not have been saved. It» destruction would have meant a serious loss to the Corporation. The employees were baok rtook.
